        "content": "<p>Jakarta (ANTARA) \u2013 Nadiem Anwar Makarim, Minister of Education,\nCulture, Research, and Technology for the 2019-2024 period, has\nexpressed sadness at observing his first Ramadan and Eid celebration\nwhilst separated from his family, as he remains detained in prison\ncustody due to allegations of corruption in the Chromebook procurement\ncase.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI am very sad that I cannot be with my family and my children. It is\ndeeply saddening for me,\u201d said Nadiem when encountered before a witness\nexamination hearing at the Corruption Court at the Central Jakarta\nDistrict Court on Monday.<\/p>\n<p>Nevertheless, despite still undergoing medical treatment due to his\nhealth condition, he expressed gratitude at being able to observe the\nRamadan fast during this year\u2019s holy month alongside fellow detainees in\nthe correctional facility.<\/p>\n<p>Together with other inmates, Nadiem stated that they were able to\nsupport one another, even organising joint iftars (breaking of the\nfast).<\/p>\n<p>During Eid, he hopes his family will be able to visit the detention\nfacility to celebrate the holiday together.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is my first Eid separated from my family,\u201d he remarked.<\/p>\n<p>In the alleged corruption case concerning the education\ndigitalisation programme involving procurement of Chromebook laptops and\nChrome Device Management (CDM) within the Ministry of Education for\n2019\u20132022, Nadiem is accused of committing corruption causing state\nfinancial losses valued at Rp2.18 trillion.<\/p>\n<p>The corruption allegedly occurred through the implementation of\nprocurement of technology-based learning equipment in the form of\nChromebook laptops and CDM in the budget years 2020, 2021, and 2022 in\nnon-compliance with procurement planning and procurement principles.<\/p>\n<p>Nadiem\u2019s actions are alleged to have been committed jointly with\nthree other defendants in separate proceedings, namely Ibam, Mulyatsyah,\nand Sri Wahyuningsih, as well as Jurist Tan, who remains at large.<\/p>\n<p>Specifically, the state losses cited include Rp1.56 trillion related\nto the education digitalisation programme at the ministry, and the\nequivalent of 44.05 million United States dollars or approximately\nRp621.39 billion resulting from procurement of CDM that was unnecessary\nand of no benefit to the education digitalisation programme.<\/p>\n<p>Through these actions, Nadiem is alleged to have received funds\ntotalling Rp809.59 billion originating from PT Aplikasi Karya Anak\nBangsa (PT AKAB) through PT Gojek Indonesia.<\/p>\n<p>It is noted that the majority of PT AKAB\u2019s funding sources derived\nfrom Google investment valued at 786.99 million US dollars.<\/p>\n<p>This can be observed from Nadiem\u2019s assets recorded in his annual\nwealth statement in 2022, which showed acquisition of securities valued\nat Rp5.59 trillion.<\/p>\n<p>For his actions, the former education minister faces potential\npenalties under Article 2 paragraph (1) or Article 3 in conjunction with\nArticle 18 of Law Number 31 of 1999 regarding the Eradication of\nCorruption Offences as amended and supplemented by Law Number 20 of\n2001, in conjunction with Article 55 paragraph (1) subsection 1 of the\nCriminal Code.<\/p>",
