JAKARTA \u2014 The former Minister of Education, Culture, Research, and\nTechnology, Nadiem Makarim, expressed his appreciation to the Presidents\nof the Republic of Indonesia while delivering his plea at the Central\nJakarta Corruption Court on Tuesday (2\/6\/2026).<\/p>\n
Nadiem paid his respects to President Prabowo Subianto, the 7th\nPresident Joko Widodo, the 6th President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono, and\nthe 5th President Megawati Soekarnoputri.<\/p>\n
\u201cThanks to the democratic legacy they fought for, today I am able to\nstand before Your Honours, the Panel of Judges, to present my defence as\na citizen. This is a right that serves as one of the most precious\npillars of the Republic we all love,\u201d Nadiem stated.<\/p>\n
\u201cAnd certainly, I wish to thank from the bottom of my heart the\nentire Indonesian people who have followed this trial, helping to\nuncover the truth in their own ways. Because of all this support and\nprayer, I do not stand alone today,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n
In his plea, Nadiem also expressed his gratitude after being granted\npermission to undergo health recovery at home following his fifth\nsurgery.<\/p>\n
\u201cAfter almost nine months in prison, it is difficult to find the\nwords to explain my happiness at being able to reunite with my four\nchildren during this recovery period,\u201d he explained.<\/p>\n
In addition to his family, Nadiem extended his thanks to doctors and\nmedical personnel, online motorcycle taxi drivers, teachers, lecturers,\nstudents, alumni of the Kampus Merdeka programme, his legal advisory\nteam, as well as professors and legal figures who continue to advocate\nfor justice.<\/p>\n
During the hearing, the Public Prosecutor demanded an 18-year prison\nsentence for Nadiem.<\/p>\n
\u201c(Requesting the panel of judges) to sentence the Defendant, Nadiem\nAnwar Makarim, to 18 years of imprisonment, reduced by the time the\nDefendant has spent in detention, with an order for the Defendant to be\nimmediately held in a State Detention Centre,\u201d the prosecutor\nstated.<\/p>\n
\u201c(Regarding restitution) it involves the Defendant\u2019s wealth which is\ndisproportionate to his legitimate income or is suspected to stem from\ncorruption,\u201d the prosecutor added.<\/p>\n
