Former Minister of Education, Culture, Research, and Technology,\nNadiem Anwar Makarim, has claimed that the procurement of Chromebooks\nand Chrome Device Management (CDM) saved state expenditure by at least\nRp 3.9 trillion. Prosecutors at the Central Jakarta Corruption Court\nhave expressed confusion regarding this claim.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe are still questioning why Nadiem would make such a statement.\nWhat expenditure of Rp 3.9 trillion was saved? In fact, trial facts show\nthat the price of Windows was Rp 6 million, and the price of Chromebooks\nwas also Rp 6 million,\u201d stated prosecutor Aditya Rachman Rosadi during\nthe hearing on Tuesday (2\/6\/2026).<\/p>\n
Prosecutors asserted that the state actually suffered losses in the\nChromebook procurement. They cited the expertise of the Financial and\nDevelopment Supervisory Agency (BPKP) in calculating state losses in\nvarious corruption cases to support their stance.<\/p>\n
Prosecutors also alleged that there was price manipulation involved\nin the procurement. Prosecutor Dery Gusman stated that there was\nevidence of price inflation, noting that while certain items could be\npurchased online with specific high-end specifications, the procurement\nversion offered lower specifications at the same price of Rp 5 to 6\nmillion.<\/p>\n
Prosecutor Parade Hutasoit added that they did not see malicious\nintent from Google in this procurement, but rather focused on Nadiem\u2019s\nalleged role. \u201cWe must look at who had the intent here, which is Mr\nNadiem himself\u2026 we do not see malicious intent from Google, but rather\nit lies with Nadiem, both in his capacity with Gojek and GOTO as a\nminister,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
Prosecutors dismissed claims that the prosecution is politically\nmotivated, stating that the case is strictly based on legal facts and\nevidence presented during the trial.<\/p>\n
In his defence (pleidoi), Nadiem Makarim maintained his innocence,\narguing that the decision to use Chrome OS\u2014which is free\u2014saved the state\nsignificant funds. He argued that the case arose from an investigative\nerror rather than unlawful actions or state losses. Nadiem further\nclaimed that he never signed any documents regarding the Chromebook\nprocurement and that the decision rested with the technical team.
