        "content": "<p>Jakarta \u2014 Nadiem Anwar Makarim, Education, Culture, Research, and\nTechnology Minister for the 2019\u20132024 period, revealed that the\nselection of Chromebooks and Chrome Device Management (CDM) in the\neducation digitalisation programme was conducted with the approval of\nthe relevant director general.<\/p>\n<p>Nadiem stated that the selection was based on findings from a\ntechnical team study, which was ultimately decided by the directorate\nwith the approval of the director general in question.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt has always been like that from the beginning,\u201d said Nadiem whilst\ngiving testimony as a crown witness at a corruption court hearing at the\nCentral Jakarta District Court on Tuesday.<\/p>\n<p>Despite possessing the prerogative right to express opinions and\nissue orders, Nadiem acknowledged that he did not interrupt the\nChromebook selection in the programme at that time, nor did he change\nthe choice from Windows systems to Chrome.<\/p>\n<p>Therefore, according to him, the procurement did not require his\napproval to proceed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat is my answer, but I respectfully ask for correction if Mrs Sri\nand Mr Mul have different views,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Nadiem served as crown witness (witness and defendant simultaneously)\nagainst three defendants: Ibrahim Arief, alias Ibam, former Technology\nConsultant at the Ministry of Education, Culture, Research, and\nTechnology; Sri Wahyuningsih, Director of Primary Schools at the\nDirectorate General of Early Childhood, Primary, and Secondary Education\n(Ditjen PAUD Dikdasmen) of the Ministry in 2020\u20132021; and Mulyatsyah,\nDirector of Junior Secondary Schools at the same directorate in\n2020\u20132021.<\/p>\n<p>The losses include Rp1.56 trillion related to the education\ndigitalisation programme at the Ministry, as well as US$44.05 million or\napproximately Rp621.39 billion due to unnecessary and ineffective CDM\nprocurement in the education digitalisation programme.<\/p>\n<p>It is stated that the three defendants committed unlawful acts\ntogether with Nadiem and Jurist Tan, former Special Staff to the\nEducation Minister.<\/p>\n<p>The unlawful acts committed by the defendants include procuring\ntechnology-based learning equipment in the form of Chromebook laptops\nand CDM in budget years 2020, 2021, and 2022 that did not comply with\nprocurement planning and various procurement principles.<\/p>\n<p>For their actions, the three defendants face penalties under Article\n2 paragraph (1) or Article 3 in conjunction with Article 18 of Law\nNumber 31 Year 1999 on the Eradication of Corruption Offences as amended\nand supplemented by Law Number 20 Year 2001, in conjunction with Article\n55 paragraph (1) of the Criminal Code.<\/p>",
