Villagers say they have frequently asked the Hamparan Perak
\nsubdistrict administration to provide them with land to bury
\ntheir dead, but have received no response.<\/p>\n
\"This is the only village in the province without a public
\ncemetery. Residents have no other choice but to bury their dead
\nin their yards,\" said Arbain, head of the village with a

Maluku to have new governor<\/p>\n
AMBON, Maluku: Home Minister Hari Sabarno is scheduled to
\nswear in Brig. Gen. (ret) Karel Ralahalu as governor and Mohammad
\nAbdullah Latuconsina as deputy governor on Sept. 15.<\/p>\n
Cak Saimima, a public administration assistant to the
\ngovernor, said here on Saturday that acting governor Sinyo
\nSarundayang has been asked to coordinate with the provincial
\nlegislative council to make necessary preparations for the
\nswearing-in ceremony.<\/p>\n
Sarundayang has been acting governor for ten months, since
\nformer governor Saleh Latuconsina's term of office expired on
\nDec. 11, 2002. The gubernatorial election was delayed because of
\nthe unstable political conditions in the province, due to the
\nprolonged sectarian conflict in which more than 6,000 people have
\nbeen killed between 1999 and 2002.<\/p>\n
Karel and his running mate, Abdullah, won a major victory in

Govt to repair Sumatra east coast highway<\/p>\n
JAMBI CITY, Jambi: The central government will immediately
\ndisburse Rp 54 billion (US$6.3 million) to repair a 105-kilometer
\nsection of the Sumatra east coast highway -- between Muara
\nTembesi and Sarolangun.<\/p>\n
Rijal Jalil, a member of the House of Representatives, said
\nhere on Saturday that the funds for the repair project came from
\nthe International Bank for Reconstruction and Development (IBRD),
\nthe Asian Development Bank (ADB) and the 2003 state budget.<\/p>\n
\"The highway has been damaged by overloaded trucks, because of
\nthe lack of supervision by local authorities,\" he said.<\/p>\n
He added the highway was vital in the province's economic

200 Papuan TB patients in dire need of treatment<\/p>\n
JAYAPURA, Papua: At least 200 tuberculosis (TB) patients in
\nthe mountainous regency of Bintang, Papua, are in desperate need
\nof medical treatment, a local official has said.<\/p>\n
The patients -- both adults and children -- were in a serious
\ncondition since they had suffered from the infectious disease for
\nsome time, head of the district's health office, Paulus Sumino
\nsaid here Saturday.<\/p>\n
\"Despite several calls for help, no medical assistance has
\ncome, either from the central government or the provincial
\nadministration, while the condition of the patients is
\nincreasingly getting worse,\" he said.<\/p>\n
Apart from TB, he said, a large number of children in the
\ndistrict -- under 10 years old -- are also suffering from yaws,
\nan infectious tropical disease caused by the spirochete bacteria.<\/p>\n
Bintang is one of 13 new regencies, officiated by Home
\nMinister Hari Sabarno in April.<\/p>\n
Due to its treacherous terrain, the new regency can be reached

Reforestation program under threat<\/p>\n
KOTABARU TOWN, South Kalimantan: A reforestation program for
\n83-hectares of deforested area in Kotabaru and Tanah Bumbu
\nregencies is under threat, since the teakwood seedlings that were
\nplanted in the two barren areas have died due to the prolonged
\ndrought.<\/p>\n
Amang, a resident of Gedambaan village in Kotabaru regency,
\nsaid people living in the two regencies appreciated the Rp 484
\nmillion reforestation program \"but we are dissatisfied with the
\npoor condition of the newly planted seedlings.\"<\/p>\n
Another resident, Arpan, blamed the plant's poor condition on
\nthe local administration because the plants were abandoned after
\nthey were planted.<\/p>\n
\"Villagers would volunteer to take care of the plants during
\nthe drought if they were asked to, because the reforestation
\nprogram will also benefit them,\" he said.<\/p>\n
Meanwhile, head of the local forestry office Hasbi Thawab said
\nthe reforestation program had been suspended until the rainy
