Jakarta road's first phase completed<\/p>\n<p>JAKARTA (JP): The first phase of a nine-kilometer road linking<br>\nCakung and Cilincing in North Jakarta has been completed.<\/p>\n<p>Construction of the remaining four kilometers is scheduled to<br>\nbe completed in October.<\/p>\n<p>The state-funded project, at an estimated cost of Rp 36.47<br>\nbillion (US$15.65 million), is expected to ease the traffic flow<br>\nof trailers moving from warehouse centers to the city's main port<br>\nat Tanjung Priok.<\/p>\n<p>Ministry of Public Works data shows that about 50,000 trailers<br>\ntravel to and from the port every day.<\/p>\n<p>Minister of Public Works Radinal Moochtar and Minister of<br>\nTransportation Haryanto Dhanutirto checked up on the project<br>\nyesterday along with Governor Surjadi Soedirdja, who proposed<br>\nthat the ministers lend assistance to the city administration in<br>\ntaking care of the roads around Tanjung Priok.<\/p>\n<p>Haryanto agreed, saying that the government should help<br>\nmaintain the roads, which are critical to the smooth and timely<br>\nshipment of goods.<\/p>\n<p>\"The government should help the municipality because we expect<br>\nthe number of containers in the port this year to reach two<br>\nmillion units, up from 1.6 million last year,\" the minister said.<\/p>\n<p>Container traffic in the area is currently confined to a two-<br>\nlane road, whose condition continues to deteriorate.<\/p>\n<p>The road has also been lined with hundreds of illegal<br>\nshanties, many of which the city administration has already<br>\ndemolished.
