N. Jakarta fire kills two people<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): Two teenagers died while trying to extinguish a
\nblaze which destroyed 162 houses on Jl. Bandengan Utara, in
\nPenjaringan district, North Jakarta, yesterday afternoon.<\/p>\n
Witnesses said that the victims, identified as Ervan, 14, and
\nWahyu, 19, were electrocuted by electrical cables on the roof of
\na building.<\/p>\n
Their bodies were taken to Cipto Mangunkusumo General Hospital
\nfor a postmortem examination.<\/p>\n
The fire, which left hundreds of residents homeless, started
\nabout 11:30 a.m and is believed to have originated in a house
\nbelonging to a roadside vendor called Tukimin.<\/p>\n
\"A kerosene stove which exploded in the house may have sparked
\nthe fire,\" Madnyo, a firefighter, said.<\/p>\n
Madnyo said that Tukimin may have forgotten to turn off his
\nstove when he left for work in the morning.<\/p>\n
The fire spread quickly to adjacent houses which were mostly
\nmade from wood, he said.<\/p>\n
North Jakarta Fire Department deployed 20 fire engines but a
\nlack of water hampered fire fighting because the slum area, near
\nthe Pluit toll road, was far away from water resources, he said.<\/p>\n
Narrow access roads and densely packed housing posed further
\ndifficulties for fire engines, Madnyo said.<\/p>\n
And panicking residents tried to grab hoses off firefighters
\nto extinguish the blaze themselves, further impeding fire-
\nfighting operations, he said.<\/p>\n
The fire department managed to extinguish the blaze after
\nabout three hours.<\/p>\n
Only a few residents could salvage their belongings and put
\nthem in a safe place.<\/p>\n
The fire is believed to have caused hundreds of million of
