N-250 a success<\/p>\n
We have good reason to be proud of witnessing the taking-off
\nand safe landing of the commuter N-250 aircraft manufactured by
\nNusantara Aircraft Industry (IPTN), Bandung. What Mr. B.J.
\nHabibie dreamed and spoke about on many occasions has become a
\nreality. Congratulations!<\/p>\n
However, do we think this successful enterprise indicates that
\nthe nation has reached the take-off era?<\/p>\n
As has been promised, in 2003 IPTN will be introducing more
\nsophisticated passenger jets, the N-2130. This mega project can
\nonly be realized if US$2 billion is raised. President Soeharto
\nhas called on the whole population to support the project.<\/p>\n
As far as I am concerned, the carrying out of the project is
\nnothing to worry about. Habibie can go ahead with his program to
\nmanufacture sophisticated aircraft of whatever kind. He certainly
\nhas all the needed capacities and capabilities to realize the
\nprogram which at the same time will enhance the dignity and
\nreputation of the nation. And we all have to express our full
\nsupport, even if only by saying prayers.<\/p>\n
But what I wish to remind people is that the aircraft is not
\neverything. The aircraft and technology are only a means, not an
\nobjective. Our goal remains a \"just and prosperous society\".
\nIPTN's success is no indication of the people's prosperity. Far
\nfrom it. We have still about 25 million people living under the
\npoverty line. These people cannot be entertained by the mere
\npresence of N-250 or N-2130 flying aloft. The disturbing question
\nis: will the 25 million people be included in the take-off event
\nby 2003? Or will they remain mingling about on the runway? This
\nwill be real work for Mr. Habibie and Mr. Ginandjar.<\/p>\n
Please, consider this: It is easy to make progress, but to
\nmake progress together and step forward together is a different
\nmatter.<\/p>\n
