Reports of these mysterious booms also occurred near\nSeneca Lake in New York, United States.<\/p>\n<p>However, is this phenomenon truly triggered by the movement of the\nEarth\u2019s plates? Scientists have finally spoken out to clarify the\nconfusion.<\/p>\n<p>According to IFL Science, a comprehensive study in 2020 attempted to\nsolve this mystery. The research team utilised super-sensitive seismic\ndata from the EarthScope Transportable Array (ESTA) to analyse and\ncompare various reports of booming sounds in the US, including data up\nto 2023. Researchers from the University of North Carolina also\nconducted in-depth tracking based on news reports and verified the\nsounds using seismo-acoustic data from ESTA.<\/p>\n<p>The results were surprising. Scientists concluded that the series of\nexplosive sounds had no connection whatsoever to earthquake activity.\n\u2018Generally, we believe this is an atmospheric phenomenon\u2014we don\u2019t think\nit\u2019s from seismic activity,\u2019 said lead researcher Eli Bird. \u2018Our\nassumption is that the sound propagates through the atmosphere rather\nthan through the ground,\u2019 he added.<\/p>\n<p>During the research process, the team analysed infrasound data\u2014very\nlow-frequency sound waves that are inaudible to the human ear. Using\nESTA equipment, they successfully captured signals lasting between 1 and\n10 seconds that matched the timing of boom reports from residents.\nDespite this, there is still no single definitive explanation for the\noriginal source of these skyquakes.<\/p>\n<p>Nevertheless, scientists have mapped out several hypotheses for the\nprimary causes of this atmospheric phenomenon. One strong theory points\nto sonic booms generated by jet aircraft travelling faster than the\nspeed of sound. Another theory links the phenomenon to bolide activity\nin the upper atmosphere\u2014a type of large meteor that explodes in the sky\ninvisibly, leaving only the sound waves of the boom to travel down to\nthe Earth\u2019s surface.<\/p>",
