Myanmar-U.S. team studies elephants<\/p>\n
MYANMAR: A joint Myanmar-U.S. wildlife conservation team has
\nattached data-emitting collars to three wild elephants in
\nMyanmar's mountain ranges to survey populations of the beasts, a
\nsemiofficial newspaper said on Sunday.<\/p>\n
The team last month attached the collars to the three
\nelephants -- two females and a teenage male -- to track their
\nmovements in the Bago Yoma mountain ranges north of the capital
\nYangon, where people have had encounters with the animals, the
\nMyanmar Times reported.<\/p>\n
A Global Positioning System device in the collars transmits
\nthe precise locations of the giant mammals to a satellite, which
\nforwards the data to a ground station.<\/p>\n
Dan Kelly, an ecologist from the U.S.-based Smithsonian
\nNational Zoological park and one of the team's leaders, said the
\ndevices have already sent valuable information about the
\nelephants' seasonal movements, their impact on human settlements
\nand their preferred habitat.<\/p>\n
It was the second time such collars have been fitted to
\nelephants in Myanmar after an earlier project in central
\nMyanmar's Alaungdaw Kathapa National Park in 2002. -- AP<\/p>",
