        "content": "<p>Myanmar pays interest<\/p>\n<p>RANGOON (Reuter): Myanmarese private banks that are authorized<br>\nto conduct foreign banking business will for the first time be<br>\nallowed to pay interest on foreign currency deposits, official<br>\nmedia reported on Saturday.<\/p>\n<p>Finance and Revenue Minister Brigadier-General Win Tin said<br>\nbanks would be allowed to pay interest on the deposits effective<br>\nJuly 1, state-run newspapers reported.<\/p>\n<p>He said these banks could earn foreign exchange income to pay<br>\ninterest by depositing their foreign exchange in interest-bearing<br>\naccounts with banks abroad or by extending loans in foreign<br>\ncurrency locally.<\/p>\n<p>The central bank would notify the banks of the deposit and<br>\nlending rates to be used, based on the Singapore Interbank<br>\nOffered Rate (SIBOR).<\/p>\n<p>There are 17 local private banks in Myanmar with 21 branches<br>\nin major cities. Seven of them have been authorized to conduct<br>\nforeign exchange transactions.<\/p>",
