        "content": "<p>Myanmar media praises ASEAN<\/p>\n<p>YANGON (DPA): Myanmar&apos;s government-controlled press ran<br>\ncommentaries yesterday that praised the Association of Southeast<br>\nAsian Nations (ASEAN) for repudiating the United States&apos; recent<br>\ndecision to slap a new economic sanction on the country.<\/p>\n<p>On Tuesday, United States President Bill Clinton approved a<br>\nban on all new American investments in Myanmar in response &quot;to a<br>\nconstant and continuing pattern of severe repression by the State<br>\nLaw and Order Restoration Council (SLORC)&quot;, as the Myanmar<br>\nmilitary junta is called.<\/p>\n<p>Several ASEAN leaders have stated publicly that the U.S. move<br>\nwould have no impact on efforts to admit Myanmar, along with<br>\nCambodia and Laos, into their regional grouping, probably<br>\nsometime this year.<\/p>\n<p>&quot;The hoped-for preemptive strike against our ASEAN entry will<br>\nfail, for all our good neighbors around here have come up with<br>\nstrong repudiation of the U.S. action,&quot; said an editorial<br>\ncommentary, believed to reflect SLORC opinion, which ran in all<br>\nMyanmar dailies yesterday.<\/p>",
