Myanmar media praises ASEAN<\/p>\n
YANGON (DPA): Myanmar's government-controlled press ran
\ncommentaries yesterday that praised the Association of Southeast
\nAsian Nations (ASEAN) for repudiating the United States' recent
\ndecision to slap a new economic sanction on the country.<\/p>\n
On Tuesday, United States President Bill Clinton approved a
\nban on all new American investments in Myanmar in response "to a
\nconstant and continuing pattern of severe repression by the State
\nLaw and Order Restoration Council (SLORC)", as the Myanmar
\nmilitary junta is called.<\/p>\n
Several ASEAN leaders have stated publicly that the U.S. move
\nwould have no impact on efforts to admit Myanmar, along with
\nCambodia and Laos, into their regional grouping, probably
\nsometime this year.<\/p>\n
"The hoped-for preemptive strike against our ASEAN entry will
\nfail, for all our good neighbors around here have come up with
\nstrong repudiation of the U.S. action," said an editorial
\ncommentary, believed to reflect SLORC opinion, which ran in all
\nMyanmar dailies yesterday.<\/p>",
