        "content": "<p>Myanmar leader visits Laos<\/p>\n<p>VIENTIANE (AFP): The number two in the Myanmar military junta,<br>\nMaung Aye, held talks in Vientiane on Monday as European Union<br>\nministers prepared to end a three-year-old boycott of the junta's<br>\nrepresentatives in the Association of Southeast Asian Nations.<\/p>\n<p>The powerful Myanmar army chief headed a high-ranking 19-<br>\nstrong delegation, which included Foreign Minister Win Aung, for<br>\nthe three-day visit, Lao sources said.<\/p>\n<p>Win Aung is expected to stay on in the Lao capital for next<br>\nweek's breakthrough meeting between EU and ASEAN ministers, their<br>\nfirst since Myanmar's admission to the Southeast Asian grouping<br>\nin 1997.<\/p>\n<p>The delegation went straight into talks with Lao leaders,<br>\nalthough details were not immediately available from officials of<br>\nthe two highly secretive regimes.<\/p>\n<p>Laos was celebrating a national holiday on Monday after<br>\nfestivities marking the 25th anniversary of the communist regime<br>\non Saturday and all government ministries were closed.<\/p>\n<p>Lao security officials also carefully shielded the Myanmar<br>\ndelegation when they returned to their city center hotel for an<br>\nevening reception.<\/p>\n<p>Security was tight around the presidential palace throughout<br>\nthe day with armed police mounting roadblocks on surrounding<br>\nstreets.<\/p>\n<p>Several Myanmar armed opposition groups have strong support<br>\nacross the Mekong in neighboring Thailand.<\/p>\n<p>Vientiane has also itself been the target of a mystery bombing<br>\ncampaign over the past eight months which has killed one person<br>\nand wounded more than 40, according to diplomats.<\/p>\n<p>It was the second foreign visit by the Myanmar number two in<br>\nas many months after a long period in which he made none.<\/p>\n<p>Last month he traveled to neighboring India for talks in which<br>\nhe reached agreement on joint efforts to counter separatist<br>\ninsurgency along the common border.<\/p>",
