MPR Chairman Ahmad Muzani has highlighted the persistently low\nnational milk production compared to domestic needs. He described this\nsituation as a major opportunity to promote the development of dairy\ncattle centres, particularly in cool-climate areas such as Wonosobo,\nCentral Java.<\/p>\n
Muzani made these remarks while opening the APPSI Cattle Contest in\nWonosobo, Central Java, on Saturday (25\/4\/2026). According to him,\ndomestic milk production currently meets only about a quarter of the\ntotal national requirement.<\/p>\n
\u201cOur milk production is at most around 23 to 25 percent of national\nneeds. That means there is still about 75 percent of the market that can\nbe filled,\u201d said Muzani.<\/p>\n
He assessed that highland areas like Wonosobo have great potential to\nbe developed into dairy cattle centres. The cold natural conditions are\ndeemed suitable for supporting livestock productivity, especially for\nmilk producers.<\/p>\n
\u201cWith its cold climate and highlands, Wonosobo is highly potential to\nbecome a centre for meeting the national need for fresh milk,\u201d he\nstated.<\/p>\n
Muzani also connected milk needs to the government\u2019s Free Nutritious\nMeals (MBG) programme. He estimated that demand for fresh milk would\ncontinue to increase with the implementation of that programme.<\/p>\n
\u201cIn the future, milk needs will be even greater. MBG will encourage\nfresh milk consumption as part of fulfilling public nutrition,\u201d he\nexplained.<\/p>\n
Additionally, Muzani highlighted the low productivity of dairy cows\nin Indonesia compared to other countries. He noted that the average\ndairy cow in the country only produces 10-15 litres of milk per day,\nwhile in subtropical countries it can reach 25-30 litres per day.<\/p>\n
\u201cThis is a significant gap and affects the economy of farmers,\u201d he\nsaid.<\/p>\n
Therefore, he encouraged the development of cattle breeds that are\nmore adaptive to tropical climates but still have high productivity.\nAccording to him, this is important to increase the competitiveness of\nthe national livestock sector.<\/p>\n
On that occasion, Muzani also hoped for support in the form of\ninvestments and government policies to accelerate the development of\ndairy cattle centres in various regions.<\/p>\n
