Muslims fear new S'pore school rule<\/p>\n
SINGAPORE (DPA): Muslims fear their Islamic schools will be
\npenalized if the institutions fail to meet the Singapore
\ngovernment's minimum standards in English, mathematics and
\nscience, a professional body said on Tuesday.<\/p>\n
The Association of Muslim Professionals (AMP) urged Prime
\nMinister Goh Chok Tong to reconsider his proposal allowing the
\nmadrasah, or private Islamic schools, to be excluded from the
\nproposed compulsory primary education system as long as their
\nstudents pass the Primary School Leaving Examination,
\nadministered after the sixth grade, in the three subjects.<\/p>\n
The \"gentle warning\" by Goh is unfortunate, AMP said in a
\nstatement, noting madrasah producing teachers of Islam are
\ndifferent from national schools.<\/p>\n
The Islamic schools prefer to take up Goh's offer and upgrade
\nwithout being haunted by the possibility of closure, AMP said.
\nUnder Goh's proposal, madrasah which do not meet the minimum
\nstandards may not receive the exemption from national schools.<\/p>",
