        "content": "<p>Muslims fear new S'pore school rule<\/p>\n<p>SINGAPORE (DPA): Muslims fear their Islamic schools will be<br>\npenalized if the institutions fail to meet the Singapore<br>\ngovernment's minimum standards in English, mathematics and<br>\nscience, a professional body said on Tuesday.<\/p>\n<p>The Association of Muslim Professionals (AMP) urged Prime<br>\nMinister Goh Chok Tong to reconsider his proposal allowing the<br>\nmadrasah, or private Islamic schools, to be excluded from the<br>\nproposed compulsory primary education system as long as their<br>\nstudents pass the Primary School Leaving Examination,<br>\nadministered after the sixth grade, in the three subjects.<\/p>\n<p>The \"gentle warning\" by Goh is unfortunate, AMP said in a<br>\nstatement, noting madrasah producing teachers of Islam are<br>\ndifferent from national schools.<\/p>\n<p>The Islamic schools prefer to take up Goh's offer and upgrade<br>\nwithout being haunted by the possibility of closure, AMP said.<br>\nUnder Goh's proposal, madrasah which do not meet the minimum<br>\nstandards may not receive the exemption from national schools.<\/p>",
