        "content": "<p>Muslims demand release of convicted terrorist<\/p>\n<p>Jupriadi, The Jakarta Post, Makassar<\/p>\n<p>About 100 students from a number of Islamic boarding schools in<br>\nMakassar staged a peaceful demonstration outside the provincial<br>\nlegislative council building on Friday to appeal for the release<br>\nof convicted terrorist Agus Dwikarna.<\/p>\n<p>A further 50 Muslims remain in the legislature&apos;s compound for<br>\nthe same purpose.<\/p>\n<p>The demonstrators, wearing long robes and green turbans,<br>\nevaded security guards to enter the main building and circulate<br>\nleaflets explaining their demands.<\/p>\n<p>Brandishing pro-Agus banners, the demonstrators demanded both<br>\nthe provincial administration and the central government lobby<br>\nPhilippine authorities to release Agus.<\/p>\n<p>The banners read bebaskan Ustadz Agus Dwikarna (Set free<br>\ncleric Agus Dwikarna, Gubernur harus melindungi warganya (the<br>\ngovernor must protect his citizens) and Agus bukan terroris. Agus<br>\ntidak bersalah (Agus is not a terrorist and he is not guilty).<\/p>\n<p>Agus was sentenced in the Philippines to 17 years in jail for<br>\nthe illegal possession of explosives.<\/p>\n<p>Despite a number of pro-Agus demonstrations, the government<br>\nhas insisted that it will not interfere in the Philippine&apos;s<br>\ninternal affairs.<\/p>\n<p>Iswari Al Farisi, a lawyer representing Agus, acknowledged<br>\nthat the students&apos;s action was engineered intentionally to win<br>\nsympathy from the local and central governments to press Agus&apos;<br>\ncase.<\/p>\n<p>&quot;The students were asked to go on strike to put political<br>\npressure on the government to fight for Agus. We asked the<br>\nstudents to stage the pro-Agus demonstration since we have no<br>\nmore energy to scream,&quot; he said.<\/p>\n<p>Iswari, who was among those camping in the legislature&apos;s<br>\ncompound, said they would continue fighting till the government<br>\nchanged its stance.<\/p>",
