Muslim youths protest U.S. interference<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): Forty members of a Muslim youth group staged a
\nrally in front of the American embassy here on Wednesday morning
\nprotesting, what they said, was U.S. interference in Indonesia's
\npolitics, economics and culture.<\/p>\n
The rally was marked by a minor clash between police officers
\nand the protesters when some of the youths suddenly broke ranks
\nand rushed forward closer to the embassy's front gates on Jl.
\nMedan Merdeka Selatan, Central Jakarta.<\/p>\n
Calling themselves members of the Islamic Youth Movement
\n(GPI), the group demanded the U.S. immediately halt all
\ninterference in the country.<\/p>\n
\"We condemn America for its involvement throughout Indonesia's
\nhistory, including interference in East Timor, Ambon and Aceh,\"
\nthe group's coordinator Darwin Agus said.<\/p>\n
The group also cursed America's political involvement in many
\nother countries around the world, which according to Darwin, is
\nbased on hypocritical and double standard principles.<\/p>\n
He cited the ongoing crisis in the Middle East and the war in
\nBosnia and Iraq as recent examples.<\/p>\n
The group, however, refused to meet officials at the embassy,
\nsaying such a dialogue was useless as America's guilt was
\nobvious.<\/p>\n
The group arrived at the embassy around 10 a.m. with banners
\nand posters criticizing the U.S. government.<\/p>\n
Some of the protesters said they were unemployed but denied
\nhaving received any payment for participating in the rally.<\/p>\n
The rally ended peacefully when the protesters left the scene
