The word \"Muslim\" is often spelled and pronounced \"Moslem\" in
\nEnglish. The spelling \"Moslem\" is often found in newspapers and
\npronounced as such on radio and TV broadcasts in Indonesia. This
\nspelling is also used in stickers. This can be regarded a trivial
\nmatter but it can have some impact.<\/p>\n
As far as I know, this spelling was long dropped. In an
\nIslamic journal published in Pakistan in the 1950s and 1960s, the
\nspelling was criticized and dismissed as unfavorable with
\nincorrect connotations, just like the spelling \"Mahomet.\"<\/p>\n
In the introduction to his translation of the Koran into
\nEnglish (Vermont, USA, 1985), Dr. Thomas B. Irving, an American
\nof the Islamic faith, also criticized the spelling, stating that
\nthe spelling \"Moslem\" is usually used by western circles outside
\nthe Islamic world.<\/p>\n
Today, the popular English spelling is \"Muslim\" or \"Muslims\".
\nThe same spelling is also used in publications like Encyclopedia
\nBritannica, Encyclopedia Americana, and other English scientific
\nliterature.<\/p>\n
Some English-Indonesian dictionaries and Webster's still use
\nthe unfashionable spelling. While Oxford dictionaries use the
\nword \"Muslim\". The first edition of Roeder's Who's Who in
\nIndonesia, used the spelling \"Moslem\". But in the second print,
\nthey corrected it and used \"Muslim\".<\/p>\n
