Muslim dress<\/p>\n
Ivy Susanti's writing on facts about Islam gives readers a
\nbrief overview about the religion. But, why did she take so much
\nspace just to discuss Muslim dress, especially Muslim women's
\nclothes, in this case: jilbab? (The Jakarta Post, Oct. 14, 2001:
\nWhat is it all about? Islam).<\/p>\n
In fact there are many other aspects of the religion
\nreflecting its contribution to the modern sciences, literature,
\nphilosophy, mysticism, etc. which should have been touched on
\nbriefly.<\/p>\n
The instruction to wear a head scarf for women is not only
\nfound in the Koran, but also in the New Testament (1 Corinthians,
\n11:5-6).<\/p>\n
The restriction on Muslim dress is referred to in the
\nProphet's directions in the Hadith (Prophet Muhammad's
\nexpressions, deeds, and his silence over his companions's actions
\nand remarks) -- called aurat, namely all parts of the female
\nbody, except the face and hands should be covered, while for the
\nmale, from navel to knee.<\/p>\n
Muslim women who wear the chador (veil) in the Middle East are
\ngenerally also influenced by the local customs and traditions as
\nwell as geographical and climatic considerations.<\/p>\n
