        "content": "<p>Muslim and Arab aliens in a dilemma<\/p>\n<p>UNITED STATES: As the deadline loomed for immigrants from five <br>\nArab or Muslim nations to register with U.S. authorities, <br>\nimmigration rights advocates complained that many of their <br>\nclients are caught in a difficult dilemma.<\/p>\n<p>Friday is the deadline set by the U.S. Bureau of Immigration <br>\nand Customs Enforcement for most citizens of Egypt, Kuwait, <br>\nJordan, Indonesia and Bangladesh living in the United States to <br>\nregister with the federal government.<\/p>\n<p>Similar deadlines have passed for nationals from Saudi Arabia, <br>\nPakistan, Iraq, Iran, Syria, Libya, Sudan and many other <br>\ncountries, mostly Middle Eastern or Muslim.<\/p>\n<p>Many aliens who registered have overstayed their visas or are <br>\notherwise in the country illegally, although many have <br>\napplications pending to legalize their status. Illegal status <br>\nbrings the risk of detention.<\/p>\n<p>As of April 18, more than 129,000 people had registered under <br>\nthe program, said bureau spokeswoman Lori Haley.
