I am sure all Indonesians can sing by heart our national
\nanthem, Indonesia Raya. But I am not so confident they are aware
\nof its philosophical meaning.<\/p>\n
A line from the anthem is: Bangunlah jiwanya, bangunlah
\nbadannya, untuk Indonesia Raya (develop their minds, develop
\ntheir bodies, for great Indonesia).<\/p>\n
This contains a valuable philosophy and reflects what could be
\ntermed magical power. Composer W.R. Soepratman meditated and
\nlived an ascetic life before writing the national anthem. And it
\nis correct that the people's mental state must be developed
\nbefore their physical development.<\/p>\n
But the reverse seems to be true in the implementation of
\nnational development. The physical has been emphasized over the
\nspiritual, which has been neglected. The result is moral decay;
\ncorruption and illegal fees are rife today.<\/p>\n
That is why we all need to reflect on the philosophical
\nmessage in our national anthem, and translate it into a
\nconsistent pattern in our lives.<\/p>\n
