Music video clips exploit women<\/p>\n

A few years ago, our government strongly prohibited cengeng
\n(overly emotional) songs on television for fear of their bad
\ninfluence on children, who memorized the words very easily.<\/p>\n
More recently, many video clips (especially of dangdut music)
\nare appearing on television in great numbers. These clips openly
\nexploit the female body wearing shorts, mini skirts, tight
\noutfits and performing erotic dances. Apart from private
\ntelevision stations, the state's TVRI shows them frequently
\nbetween programs. The private TPI, as a station with an
\n\"educational\" mission, shows the greatest number of these clips.
\nThe government has, apparently, not taken any measures to bring
\norder to the programs. The video clips have a very bad influence
\non people, from children to adults.<\/p>\n
Muslim figures who look strong with their Islamic parties have
\nnot been heard commenting, let alone protesting the video clips
\nor sex-oriented programs on television. Prominent members of
\nwomen's organizations seem to close their eyes; they usually
\nspeak out when fighting for women's dignity. The education world,
\ntoo, seems indifferent. Video-clip producers are having a good
\ntime. Viewers are being entertained, unaware that they are
\nfalling into a trap. Let us hope that it is not a sign of the
\nsuccess of Westernization in Indonesia so that we are used to
\nproducing programs that degrade women's values and the nation in
\ngeneral.<\/p>\n
This is, possibly, a challenge for certain groups to sponsor a
\nforum to discuss the problem with the related agencies.<\/p>\n
