Murderer gets life<\/p>\n
KUPANG, East Nusa Tenggara: A government official was
\nsentenced to life yesterday for murdering a security guard in
\n1993 over fears that the victim would expose his colleagues' love
\naffairs.<\/p>\n
In a session attended by hundreds of people, judges in the
\nKefamenanu district court in Northern Central Timor regency found
\nRemison Utu Mamu, 41, guilty of premeditatedly killing Yacob
\nAlle.<\/p>\n
The trial has been packed with visitors curious to hear
\nwitnesses reveal local public works officials' affairs with their
\nsubordinates.<\/p>\n
Until presiding judge Tewa Mado announced the verdict
\nyesterday, rumors were rife that Remison, chief of the office's
\nrepairs section, would be acquitted because the case involved
\ngovernment officials.<\/p>\n
Prosecutors had sought a 15 year term for him.<\/p>\n
Another four officials are to be tried by the same court soon
\nfor their alleged involvement in the murder, Antara reported.<\/p>\n
The judges said in their verdict that the murder, that
\noccurred on the night of Dec. 16, 1993, involved several
\nofficials who feared their love affairs would be made public by
\nthe victim.<\/p>\n
As a security guard, the verdict said, Remison had caught
\nofficials having sex in their office with their subordinates on
\nseveral occasions.<\/p>\n
Remison was appointed leader of an \"execution team\" to finish
\noff Yacob. The victim's body was dumped in a ravine and found
\nonly three days later.<\/p>\n
The public works officials who have been detained and will be
\ntried soon have been identified as Nico Manjati, the office
\nchief; Benyain Solokana, administrative affairs chief; Tambunan,
\nroad and highways section chief and P. Djaratano, housing section
