Murder suspect makes final plea<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): Defense teams made their last attempts yesterday
\nto convince the East Jakarta District court that suspects charged
\nwith the murder of a family last year are innocent.<\/p>\n
The teams of lawyers defending Philipus, his wife Suparmi and
\ntheir son and nephews told the court that their clients did not
\nmurder the wife and children of Rohadi.<\/p>\n
Rohadi's wife and three children were found dead of stab
\nwounds in their home in Bambu Apus subdistrict, East Jakarta, on
\nOct. 2. The victims and the defendants were neighbors.<\/p>\n
In each of the three separate trial sessions yesterday, the
\ndefense lawyers demanded that Philipus, Suparmi and the youths be
\nexonerated of all charges.<\/p>\n
Prosecutors want Philipus and Suparmi to get death penalties,
\nand their sons and nephew to get 18 years imprisonment each for
\nthe offenses.<\/p>\n
Philipus, the main suspect, read his final defense at the East
\nJakarta district court yesterday, persisting in asserting his
\ninnocence.<\/p>\n
\"Let me remind you, team of prosecutors, that you will be
\nmaking the biggest mistake of your life in requesting my death,\"
\nhe said.<\/p>\n
Philipus added that he will hold to his declaration of
\ninnocence until the end of his life.<\/p>\n
Philipus' team of lawyers lamented the fact that the public
\nhad assumed that Philipus and his family were guilty of murdering
\nRohadi's family even before the trail began.<\/p>\n
\"Public opinion has been shaped in such ways that people are
\nnot willing to even consider the possibility that Philipus'
\nfamily may have not killed the Rohadi family,\" lawyer Hoiriah
\nIrsyadi said.<\/p>\n
Hoiriah added that prior to the court hearing, the team of
\nlawyers had asked the opinion of the popular paranormal Permadi,
\nwho seemed to believe that the facts upon which the indictment
\nwas based had been manipulated.<\/p>\n
In the two other separate hearings, the teams of lawyers
\ndemanded that defendants Suparmi and the three minors be freed of
\nall charges because there was no direct evidence of their
\ninvolvement in the killings.<\/p>\n
