Murder suspect caught unintentionally<\/p>\n
MEDAN, North Sumatra (JP): Medan police have unintentionally
\ncaught a man suspected of shooting North Sumatra Supplier
\nAssociation chairman Bekman Hutabarat, after he was apprehended
\nfor stealing a truck on Thursday.<\/p>\n
The 27-year-old Sabaruddin, who is now being detained at the
\nMedan Baru Police subprecinct for stealing a truck carrying
\ncandy, told police that he shot Bekman on Aug. 14 for Rp 20
\nmillion promised by two men identified as Alex and Jimmy, a
\npolice investigator said on Saturday.<\/p>\n
The officer said that Sabaruddin stole the truck on Jl.
\nSunggal Deli Serdang on Thursday morning, letting the driver
\nSaparudin escape unharmed.<\/p>\n
Saparudin then reported the theft to local police, who
\narrested Sabaruddin in the evening.<\/p>\n
The surprise confession from Sabaruddin was a relief to
\npolice, who had no leads in the Bekman attempted murder case.<\/p>\n
Quoting Sabaruddin, the police officer, who requested
\nanonymity, said that the suspect did not know Alex and Jimmy
\nwell.<\/p>\n
"It was a friend who introduced the suspect to Alex and
\nJimmy," the officer said, without identifying the suspect's
\nfriend, who is now wanted for questioning.<\/p>\n
"Alex and Jimmy promised them both Rp 20 million each.
\nSabaruddin and his friend had each received Rp 1 million as a
\ndown payment for the service prior to the shooting."<\/p>\n
Sabaruddin said he was riding pillion on a motorcycle driven
\nby Jimmy when he shot Bekman at the latter's residence on Jl. Sei
\nBingei No. 4\/49.<\/p>\n
Medan Police chief Sr. Comr. Badrodin Haiti confirmed the
\narrest of the self-confessed shooter and said that his officers
\nwould develop the investigation.<\/p>\n
"We'll find more witnesses before we get the main suspects,"
\nhe said.<\/p>\n
Police still do not know the motive behind the shooting.<\/p>\n
Bekman Hutabarat has now returned to Medan from Singapore,
\nwhere he underwent an operation in Gleaneagles Hospital to
\nretrieve the bullet from his spine.<\/p>\n
The bullet is now being studied in Medan Police's forensic
\nlaboratory.<\/p>\n
Police had earlier said that the shell of a bullet believed to
\nbe of an FN 32 hand gun was found at the scene of the crime soon
\nafter the shooting.<\/p>\n
Police are now still working hard to identify the person who
\nshot Sion Ginting, an Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle
\nmember of the Tanah Karo regency legislative council. He survived
