Murder of policemen<\/p>\n
Murdering policemen seems to be increasing in frequency. In
\nthe past two years, according to our records, no fewer than 15
\npolicemen have been killed in various parts of the country for
\nvarious reasons. The talk of the town is now the slaying of the
\nchief of the Pademangan police subdistrict, Maj. Noenang Kohar.
\nHe was stabbed to death by a bajaj passenger after a brief
\nargument over orderly behavior in traffic.<\/p>\n
On closer observation, it seems that the high incidence of
\ncrime in our community, particularly in the big cities, has its
\norigin in the lack of discipline among members of the community.
\nDiscipline is just as low among the law enforcing officers.
\nPolicemen often make compromises in cases of crime. Prosecutors
\nand judges can be manipulated by people involved in lawsuits. Of
\ncourse, not all prosecutors and lawyers are guilty of such
\nconduct. However, the efforts to improve the image of our law
\nenforcers seems to lack consistency.<\/p>\n
Because there is no consistency in the effort to uphold
\ndiscipline, the war against crime is conducted with vigor only
\nwhen a policeman is killed. After things have become quiet again,
\nthe climate of compromise re-emerges. Street hoodlums who were
\nchased during operations reappear in the same places and display
\nthe same behavior again.<\/p>\n
Nevertheless, people do not want to see their policemen
\nkilled. To prevent this from happening there is no other solution
\nbut to step up discipline in the police force itself.<\/p>\n
