Mulyana's trial imminent: KPK<\/p>\n

The trial of General Elections Commission (KPU) member Mulyana
\nW. Kusumah is within sight after the Corruption Eradication
\nCommission (KPK) announced on Friday the completion of its probe
\ninto alleged bribery involving him.<\/p>\n
Deputy KPK chief Tumpak Hatorangan Panggabean said Mulyana's
\ncase file would be sent to the prosecutors, who will then prepare
\nan indictment against him.<\/p>\n
"I don't have the report yet, but KPK investigators are
\nscheduled to submit the case file today to the prosecutors,"
\nTumpak told reporters at Bali Police Headquarters.<\/p>\n
It is expected that the court will receive the case file
\nwithin the next five days, and it will then set a date for the
\ntrial to begin.<\/p>\n
All cases handled by the antigraft body will be heard by the
\nspecial anticorruption court.<\/p>\n
Mulyana's case will be the third the court will have heard
\nsince its inception last December.<\/p>\n
Mulyana, who underwent another round of questioning on Friday,
\nhas demanded that the court begin his trial in order to enable
\nhim to prove his innocence.<\/p>\n
He was arrested in March in a Jakarta hotel after being caught
\nred-handed offering Rp 150 million (US$15,800) to a state
\nauditor.<\/p>\n
The bribery attempt has implicated other KPU officials, and
\nthe KPK has also found indications of their involvement in the
\nillegal acceptance of kickbacks from companies that won tenders
\nto supply election materials last year. The KPK is also
\ninvestigating possible markups in the procurements.<\/p>\n
According to Tumpak, the KPK has been very careful about
\nnaming suspects in corruption cases, as once someone is declared
\na suspect, the investigation cannot be stopped.<\/p>\n
That was why nobody had yet been declared suspects in the
\nalleged markups involving the KPU, although the KPK has said that
\nat least seven types of election materials had been affected by
\nmarkups.<\/p>\n
KPU chief Nazaruddin Syamsuddin, acting secretary-general
\nSussongko Suhardjo and treasurer Hamdani Amin have been named
\nsuspects in the acceptance of kickbacks.<\/p>\n
"There will probably be more suspects in this case. But some
\nKPU members are still abroad, so we have yet to question them,"
\nTumpak said.<\/p>\n
Former KPU member and current Minister of Justice and Human
\nRights Hamid Awaluddin is currently in Helsinki, and will be
\nquestioned as soon as he arrives home.<\/p>\n
Asked about Vice President Jusuf Kalla's defense of Hamid,
\nTumpak said no one would influence the KPK's investigation.<\/p>\n
Tumpak was visiting Bali to accompany KPK chief Taufikurahman
\nRuki who met with law enforcers on the island as part of a
\nsupervisory and coordination exercise. The two had earlier
\nvisited South Sulawesi and West Nusa Tenggara.<\/p>\n
Taufikurahman promised to help accelerate the issuance of
\npresidential consents for the investigation of local
\nadministrations and councillors suspected of involvement in
\ncorruption.<\/p>",
