'Mulyana's arrest is a good sign'<\/p>\n
The Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) has made headlines in
\nthe past two weeks by sending suspended Aceh governor Abdul Puteh
\nto jail and arresting General Elections Commission (KPU) member
\nMulyana W. Kusumah for alleged bribery. Currently, the commission
\nis tracing state money being kept overseas. The Jakarta Post
\nasked residents how they perceived the efforts made to fight
\nagainst corruption.<\/p>\n
Ardan, 29, works for a private company on Jl. Sudirman. He

Well, I think the 10-year jail term for Aceh governor Abdul
\nPuteh and the arrest of Mulyana W. Kusumah are good signs of the
\ngovernment's seriousness in eradicating corruption.<\/p>\n
Puteh's verdict indicates that there are still independent
\njudges, as we know that the Aceh governor received political
\nsupport from the Golkar party.<\/p>\n
We must also give credit to the KPK, which called to attention
\nindications of corruption in the KPU by arresting Mulyana. I hope
\nthat corruption cases in the commission will be unraveled.<\/p>\n
We are waiting for more action against other embezzlers, who
\ncontinue to enjoy their freedom, including businesspeople who
\nhave stolen state money through Bank Indonesia's fund assistance
\nscheme.<\/p>\n

The arrest of KPU member Mulyana could lead to further
\nindications of corruption in the KPU. I believe that he is not
\nalone. More KPU members must be involved in his case.<\/p>\n
But I cannot understand why the KPK did not immediately arrest
\nother KPU members. Isn't it enough proof of other parties'
\ninvolvement that Mulyana was caught red-handed trying to bribe a
\nhigh-ranking official of the Supreme Audit Agency?<\/p>\n
The credibility of the KPK is at stake if it cannot disclose
\ncorruption in the KPU.<\/p>\n
We, of course, hope that the KPK will also investigate more
\ncorruption cases in other agencies that have caused losses of
\ntrillions of rupiah to the state.<\/p>\n
Sentencing Puteh to jail is not an extraordinary thing because
\nformer Golkar leader Akbar Tandjung was also sentenced to jail by
\nthe lower courts, but the High Court exonerated him.<\/p>\n
