\nMSC, a revolutionary step for IT development<\/p>\n
The Multimedia Super Corridor (MSC) aims to revolutionize how
\nMalaysians and others in the region conduct business.<\/p>\n
Located at the bud of Asia's fastest growing markets, the MSC
\noccupies a 15-kilometer by 50-km corridor governed by
\ngroundbreaking Cyberlaws, policies and practices that enable
\noperating companies to harness the full potential of Information
\nCommunications Technology and Multimedia.<\/p>\n
Its goal is to provide an ideal multimedia environment that
\nattracts topflight Malaysian and international IT and multimedia
\ncompanies or those that have the potential to become world-
\nclass over time.<\/p>\n
The MSC has become the regional launch site for companies
\ndeveloping or using leading multimedia technology, allowing these
\ninnovators to harness Malaysia's unique competitive advantages
\nthat arise from its multicultural links, committed leadership,
\nand proven track record in developing products and services for
\nregional and global markets.<\/p>\n
As of July 6, 2001, a total of 527 companies have been granted
\nthe MSC-Status of which 43 are international world-class
\ncompanies such as NTT, Fujitsu, IBM, Sun Microsystems, Microsoft,
\nOracle, Ericsson, Nokia and Siemens.<\/p>\n
The MSC aims to attract at least 50 international world-class
\ncompanies by the year 2003.<\/p>\n
The MSC-Status companies are involved in various sectors of
\nthe Information Communication Technology (ICT) industry such as
\nweb development, e-commerce, application service providers (ASP),
\ncontent development, telecommunications, education and training,
\nsecurity, system integration, networking and software
\ndevelopment.<\/p>\n
Foreign companies with MSC-Status constitute around 34 percent
\nof the total MSC-Status companies with the majority coming from
\nEurope, the U.S. and other Asian countries.<\/p>\n
In tandem with the country's Vision 2020, the MSC is
\nactively promoting the development of a Malaysian knowledge
\nsociety as well as the development and growth of local small and
\nmedium enterprises (SMEs).<\/p>\n
As a result of these efforts, the number of Malaysian
\ncompanies constitutes the majority of 66 percent of the MSC-
\nStatus companies.<\/p>\n
The MSC is equipped with a world-class physical and
\ninformation infrastructure, and its boundary extends from the
\nPetronas Twin Towers at the Kuala Lumpur City Center in the north
\nto the new world-class Kuala Lumpur International Airport in the
\nsouth. It is also an integrated logistics hub with rapid rail
\nlinks to Kuala Lumpur, a smart highway system.<\/p>\n
The MSC is supported by a world-class high capacity global
\ntelecommunications and logistics network built on a 2.5 gigabits
\nto 10 gigabits digital fiber optic backbone.<\/p>\n
To spur the growth and development of the high value creative
\nmultimedia industry, the MSC launched the E-Village in September
\n2000.<\/p>\n
This latest development and initiative will propel the MSC to
\nbecome a regional hub for media and content development through
\nthe provision of state-of-the-art film and sound studios, digital
\nanimation studios, training and support facilities for film-
\nmaking and content development.<\/p>\n
Apart from its success in providing a world-class
\ninfrastructure, information network and attracting some of the
\nbest ICT companies in the world, the MSC has also created and
\ninspired a tremendous growth in the awareness and adoption of ICT
\nin Malaysian society.<\/p>\n
The MSC has created new knowledge-based employment
\nopportunities at a rate of 2,000 new jobs per year since
\n1996 and is projected to provide 35,000 new jobs by 2005 at the
\ncurrent rate of progress of the MSC.<\/p>\n
To fill up these new job positions, the MSC has encouraged the
\ngrowth of institutions of higher learning (IHLs) and this has
\ntremendous impact on the group enrollment ratio (GER) -- for the
\n18 to 21-year-olds entering tertiary education.<\/p>\n
The number of IHL has increased from 170 in 1996 to 623 in
\n2000. The GER has also increased from 13 percent to 22 percent
\nover the same period.<\/p>\n
The number of Malaysian students graduating in ICT related
\nsubjects has also grown rapidly and contributing to a steady
\nincrease in the number of knowledge workers for the ICT sector.<\/p>\n
Another major impact of the MSC is the growth of personal
\ncomputer (PC) penetration from 880,000 in 1996 to 2.2 million in
\n2000. The number of Internet subscribers' growth is even more
\nrapid from 90,000 in 1996 to 1.68 million in 2000.<\/p>\n
These substantial growths are indicators of Malaysia's quest
\nto become a knowledge society as envisioned in the country's
\nVision 2020.<\/p>\n
To further drive the development and growth of the MSC, seven
\nMSC Flagship Application were launched. They are the Electronic
\nGovernment, Multipurpose Card, Smart Schools, Telehealth, R&D
\nCluster, Borderless Marketing and World Wide Manufacturing Web.<\/p>\n
Together, these Flagship Applications will jump start the
\ndevelopment of MSC, provide business opportunities for ICT
\ncompanies especially Malaysian ICT SMEs and to spearhead the
\ntransformation of Malaysian society into a knowledge society.<\/p>\n
The nurturing and development of Malaysian SMEs in the ICT
\nsector plays a pivotal role in the eventual and long-term success
\nof the MSC.<\/p>\n
The critical ingredients identified to spawn Malaysian ICT
\ntechnopreneurs are a national incubator network headed by the MSG
\nCentral Incubator, venture capital financing, R&D grant, human
\nresource development, and international market access and
\nnetworking where MDC ACCESS is leading the efforts to promote
\nand champion young Malaysian ICT companies.<\/p>\n
Driving this bold initiative is the Multimedia Development
\nCorporation (MDC), a high-powered \"one-stop agency\" wholly
\nfocused on ensuring the success of the MSC and the companies
\noperating in it.<\/p>\n
It markets the MSC globally, facilitates investment,
\nformulates new Cyberlaws and policies, and sets standards for the
\nMSC's information infrastructure and urban development.<\/p>",
