        "content": "<p>MUI's antipornography movement<\/p>\n<p>From Pikiran Rakyat<\/p>\n<p>The moral movement of the Indonesian Ulemas Council (MUI) <br>\nagainst pornography was not only initiated by its central <br>\nexecutives but also resulted from its national meeting in 2000, <br>\nnational working conference in 2001 and the consensus between MUI <br>\nand central boards of other Islamic mass-based organizations, in <br>\nresponse to the negative impact of pornographic material on the <br>\nnation's character.<\/p>\n<p>As its first move, MUI had issued a ruling on pornography to <br>\nthose who claim to be Muslims, long before making its statement <br>\nabout this issue.<\/p>\n<p>TVRI's Dansa 'Yo Dansa (Let's dance) and other such programs <br>\ncriticized in the MUI statement, were cited only as some examples <br>\nof our national TV entertainment programs considered indecent, <br>\noffensive to Muslims, devoid of empathy for current national <br>\nconditions, and due to which MUI had received many complaints <br>\nfrom the public -- by mail and telephone.<\/p>\n<p>The programs, unless properly controlled, can promote the <br>\ngrowth of liberal behavior and moral permissiveness dangerous to <br>\ncharacter building. Meanwhile, various other porn-related <br>\nmaterials are presented to society by the print and electronic <br>\nmedia, now also under the spotlight of MUI and Islamic bodies.<\/p>\n<p>This antipornography movement is part of a drive against <br>\nimmorality and depravity launched by MUI and other Muslim <br>\nassociations. It has gained support from different circles like <br>\nnon-government organizations, government agencies, attorneys and <br>\nnon-Islamic parties. All the activities have been undertaken in <br>\nline with MUI's moral guidance as well as religious <br>\nresponsibility.
