The Chairman of the Indonesian Ulema Council (MUI) for Fatwa, Asrorun\nNiam Sholeh, has emphasised that the use of \u2018no pork, no lard\u2019\ndescriptions in restaurants does not necessarily guarantee that the food\nserved meets halal requirements.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe \u2018no pork, no lard\u2019 label is more of a unilateral declaration by\nbusiness owners. However, a menu that contains no pork and no lard\ncannot immediately be justified as a halal menu,\u201d Asroric Niam stated in\nJakarta on Wednesday.<\/p>\n
According to him, the halal status of food is not only determined by\nthe presence or absence of pork and its derivatives, but also\nencompasses raw materials as well as the processing and slaughtering\nmethods.<\/p>\n
He provided an example of beef-based menus, noting that their halal\nstatus must still be assessed from the slaughtering process through to\nthe final preparation.<\/p>\n
\u201cIf the slaughtering process does not comply with Sharia law, even if\nthere is no pork and the meat is clearly beef, the beef becomes haram if\nit was not slaughtered according to Sharia, and it must not be consumed\nby Muslims,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
He noted that a similar situation could occur with seafood. While\nfish is inherently halal, the processing method can affect the halal\nstatus of the dish.<\/p>\n
\u201cFor example, in a seafood menu, the fish is clearly halal, but it\nmay be processed in an unhalal manner, such as adding arrack, for\ninstance, during the cooking process,\u201d said Asrorun.<\/p>\n
Therefore, Asrorun emphasised that statements regarding the halal\nstatus of products should not be based solely on unilateral declarations\nby business owners, but must instead go through an inspection process in\naccordance with halal certification regulations.<\/p>\n
\u201cThus, it is not enough to simply have a unilateral declaration\nstating \u2018no pork, no lard\u2019 and then labelling it as halal without\nundergoing the formal certification inspection process,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n
He warned that displaying halal information that does not reflect the\nactual conditions could lead to legal consequences.
