The Indonesian Ulema Council (MUI) has affirmed a fatwa declaring it\nharam (religiously forbidden) to dump trash in rivers, lakes, and seas,\nin support of the Indonesia ASRI (Clean and Beautiful) Movement launched\nby the President to address the national waste emergency.<\/p>\n
The fatwa was affirmed during a River Cleanup Action and\ntree-planting event along the Cikeas River in Sentul, Babakanmadang\nSubdistrict, Bogor Regency, West Java, on Sunday, in observance of\nNational Waste Awareness Day (HPSN) 2026 and in welcoming Ramadan 1447\nHijri.<\/p>\n
Deputy Secretary General for Economic Affairs at the Central MUI,\nHazuarli Halim, said the fatwa is the result of deep deliberation on the\nincreasingly evident impact of environmental damage.<\/p>\n
\u201cThis fatwa declaring waste dumping as haram is the result of\nweighing the benefits and harms. Because environmental pollution brings\nadverse effects on life and health, we have taken the bold step of\ndeclaring it haram,\u201d Hazuarli said.<\/p>\n
He explained that from the perspective of Islamic jurisprudence,\nprotecting the environment is an obligation that earns spiritual reward,\nwhile polluting it constitutes a sinful act.<\/p>\n
\u201cProtecting the environment is an obligation and earns reward.\nConversely, polluting the environment is haram and sinful. While\ngovernment law carries legal sanctions, in religion the sanction is\nsin,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
Hazuarli added that MUI will push for massive dissemination of the\nfatwa through the network of mosques and preachers across Indonesia.\nAccording to Ministry of Religious Affairs data, there are approximately\n800,000 mosques that could potentially serve as centers for\nenvironmental literacy.<\/p>\n
\u201cIf these 800,000 mosques mobilize to deliver environmental literacy,\npublic awareness can be built. Sermon and lecture content must include\nmessages about protecting the environment,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
Meanwhile, Environment Minister Hanif Faisol Nurofiq welcomed the\nfatwa and said the religious dimension is important in facing the waste\nemergency.<\/p>\n
\u201cI am very pleased with this fatwa. The religious dimension is\ncrucial amid our waste emergency. We will promptly discuss this with the\nMinistry of Religious Affairs and the Ministry of Home Affairs so it can\nbe disseminated more widely,\u201d Hanif said.<\/p>\n
He stressed that Indonesia is currently under pressure from the\nglobal environmental crisis, including a waste crisis that impacts\nclimate change and public health.<\/p>\n
