MUI condemns attacks on U.S. and its planned strike on
\nAfghanistan<\/p>\n

JAKARTA (JP): Indonesia's top Islamic authority condemned on
\nTuesday the terrorist attacks on the United States while, at the
\nsame time, strongly denouncing what it termed the arrogance of
\nAmerica for its planned aggression on Afghanistan.<\/p>\n
The Indonesian Ulemas Council (MUI) called on Muslims all over
\nthe world to wage a jihad \"should the U.S. and its allies go
\nahead with their planned aggression toward Afghanistan.\"<\/p>\n
The council said it strongly condemned the terrorist attacks
\nin which hijacked aircraft were slammed into the World Trade
\nCenter twin towers in New York and the Pentagon, claiming
\nthousands of lives.<\/p>\n
\"We extend our deep condolences to the bereaved families, with
\nthe hope that they can be resolute in facing this tragedy,\" said
\nCouncil Secretary General Din Syamsuddin (left, photo above) at a
\nmedia briefing held after a meeting with representatives of 32
\nIslamic organizations here on Tuesday.<\/p>\n
He said the attacks on the U.S. were in violation of Islamic
\nvalues that underlined the need to forge love among human beings,
\nand stressed humanity and peace.<\/p>\n
However, Din was quick to say that aggression toward
\nAfghanistan could be seen as hostility and hatred against Islam
\nand Muslims, and as injustice, terrorism and a new form of
\nimperialism.<\/p>\n
\"Therefore, we call on the U.S. government to reflect on the
\ninjustices it has been responsible for and the double standards
\nit has adopted, especially the violations against human rights
\nthat have affected the Muslim community,\" he said.<\/p>\n
The council also urged the United Nations not to tolerate
\naggression by any country against any another \"because it is in
\ncontradiction with the principles the UN has embraced.\"<\/p>\n
\"So, we call on Muslims in the world for jihad fii sabilillah
\n(fight in the path of Allah) should aggression by the U.S. and
\nits allies against Afghanistan and the Islamic world occur. We
\nurge the government of Islamic countries, the Arabic states in
\nparticular, to adhere to izzul Islam wal muslimin (the glory of
\nIslam and its followers) and avoid being trapped into supporting
\nthe subjective interests of the U.S.,\" he said.<\/p>\n
Also present at the meeting were MUI chairman H. Amidhan and
\nofficials of 32 Islamic organizations, including Muhammadyah and
\nan organization under the Nahdlatul Ulama (NU).<\/p>\n
The council urged the Indonesian government not to be
\npersuaded by the U.S. to support the planned aggression in any
\nform, political or moral, which included not allowing Indonesian
\nterritory or airspace to be used by the U.S. armada or by its
\nmilitary airplanes.<\/p>\n
It also strongly criticized the threats, searches and
\nintimidation by hardline groups against Americans living in
\nIndonesia, saying that such actions would only tarnish the image
\nof Islam.<\/p>\n
When asked if a \"jihad\" meant an armed conflict against the
\nWest, Din said, \"No, fighting in the name of Allah can mean many
