MUI calls for rights body to be dissolved<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): The Indonesian Ulemas Council (MUI) called on
\nthe government to dissolve the National Commission on Human
\nRights (Komnas HAM) for failing to respond satisfactorily to
\nhuman rights violations in Maluku and North Maluku.<\/p>\n
\"The rights body and many other non-governmental organizations
\nhave taken a discriminative stance and have used double standards
\nin handling human rights abuses in the country,\" MUI acting
\nchairman Amidhan said here on Tuesday.<\/p>\n
Amidhan said the rights body had failed to address seriously
\nthe riot in Kupang, West Nusa Tenggara, and the violence in Ambon
\nwhich began last year.<\/p>\n
On the other hand, he said, the rights body had given priority
\nand a focused a great deal of attention on East Timor.<\/p>\n
Amidhan suggested a new independent body be formed to replace
\nthe commission. \"The House of Representative should be the one to
\nselect the independent members.\"<\/p>\n
House Deputy Speaker Tosari Wijaya concurred, saying the
\nrights body should be replaced with a new one whose members were
\nmore neutral.<\/p>\n
\"The government should disband the rights body because it has
\nnot been neutral in handling human rights abuses in the country,\"
\nhe said here on Tuesday.<\/p>\n
He said the rights body often gave the impression of being
\nunwilling to address human rights abuses in which the victims
\nwere Muslims.<\/p>\n
He further called on security personnel deployed in Maluku and
\nNorth Maluku to remain neutral and enforce the law impartially.<\/p>\n
Tosari said the government should take strict action against
\npersons or groups violating the law. \"It may be better for the
\ngovernment to impose a military emergency in the two provinces to
\nend the sectarian violence.\"<\/p>\n
He said while the government had taken action it was not yet
\nserious in resolving the conflict in Maluku. (04\/rms)<\/p>",
