        "content": "<p>MUI calls for 'jihad' to protect country<\/p>\n<p>JAKARTA (JP): The Indonesian Ulemas Council concluded its<br>\nthree-day congress by calling on Moslems to wage a jihad (holy<br>\nwar) alongside the government and the military to protect the<br>\ncountry from political and economic pressures.<\/p>\n<p>\"As the majority in the population, we are obliged to maintain<br>\nthe nation's unity and protect it from irresponsible groups and<br>\nforeign conspiracies,\" chairman Hasan Basri said at the closing<br>\nceremony here yesterday.<\/p>\n<p>Quoting a verse from the Koran, he said: \"Whoever fights in<br>\nthe name of Allah the Almighty shall be guided toward the right<br>\npath.\"<\/p>\n<p>Basri stressed that Indonesian Moslems should play an active<br>\nrole in lifting the nation out of its present predicament.<\/p>\n<p>He said each Moslem could fight against the economic crisis by<br>\nignoring baseless rumors and calls for illegal actions.<\/p>\n<p>\"Our true enemies are the speculators and hoarders (of staple<br>\ncommodities) because they continue to weaken the economy,\" he<br>\nsaid.<\/p>\n<p>Responding to the influential body's call, a prominent figure<br>\nof the Moslem organization Nahdlatul Ulama, Ma'ruf Amin, said the<br>\njihad included fighting against poverty and the shortage of basic<br>\ncommodities.<\/p>\n<p>Amin said the Moslem leaders agreed that the present situation<br>\nshould be considered a national crisis and that the true enemies<br>\nof the Moslem community were the negative impacts of the crisis,<br>\nsuch as increased poverty.<\/p>\n<p>He said the jihad should be seen as a fight against<br>\nirresponsible groups, such as speculators and those who circulate<br>\nrumors.<\/p>\n<p>The secretary-general of the Indonesian Islamic Propagation<br>\nCouncil, Hussien Umar, said the call for jihad reflects Moslem<br>\nconcern over the present situation in the country.<\/p>\n<p>\"Jihad has a broad meaning.
