In the plenary session of the meeting held in Jakarta on March
\n3, 1997, executives of the Muhammadiyah Youth expressed their
\nastonishment and at the same time deplored the ongoing
\ncontroversy over the resignation of Amien Rais from the Expert
\nCouncil of the Indonesian Council of Intellectuals (ICMI). It is
\nsurprising because the reactions came from outsiders who tend to
\ndramatize the issue to the point that it is out of proportion.<\/p>\n
It was deemed necessary to warn the public that Amien Rais'
\nresignation from the ICMI's Council of Experts was entirely an
\ninternal affair between Muhammadiyah and ICMI. It should be
\nrealized that the person concerned had time and again stated that
\nhis resignation was of his own will. Muhammadiyah has never
\nmeddled in other parties' internal affairs. We appeal to all
\nparties to stop making statements let alone conducting
\ndemonstrations either for or against the case, which could
\ndisturb stability and peace prior to the 1997 elections and the
\ngeneral session of the People's Consultative Assembly in 1998.<\/p>\n
