Muhammadiyah mulls establishing party<\/p>\n
JAKARTA: Muhammadiyah Youth chairman Abdul Mukti said on
\nFriday that his organization was considering establishing a
\npolitical party as the existing parties were unable to
\naccommodate the aspirations and interest of Muhammadiyah members.<\/p>\n
\"Several Muhammadiyah leaders and members in PAN, the PPP and
\nother parties have given positive responses to our suggestion
\nthat we form an alternative party for Muhammadiyah members,\"
\nAbdul was quoted by Antara as saying on Friday.<\/p>\n
Muhammadiyah, the second largest Muslim organizations in the
\ncountry, claims to have around 30 million members.<\/p>\n
The country's largest Muslim organization, Nahdlatul Ulama,
\nestablished the National Awakening Party (PKB), currently the
\nsixth biggest party in the country, in 1999.<\/p>\n
Abdul said he would bring up the idea at a Muhammadiyah
\nmeeting in Mataram, West Nusa Tenggara, in December 2004.
