        "content": "<p>Muhammadiyah goes back to basics<\/p>\n<p>YOGYAKARTA (JP): The demise of the New Order authoritarian<br>\nregime has inspired Muhammadiyah, the country's second largest<br>\nIslamic organization, to replace Pancasila state ideology with<br>\nIslam in its statute.<\/p>\n<p>Muhammadiyah secretary-general Muchlas Abror told a news<br>\nconference here on Thursday the crucial change would be proposed<br>\nduring the organization's 45th congress in Jakarta from July 8 to<br>\nJuly 11.<\/p>\n<p>A special team led by a Muhammadiyah executive, Ramli Toha, is<br>\nworking on the proposal, said Muchlas.<\/p>\n<p>\"Changing the existing statute is part of the organization's<br>\nanticipation of the 21st century,\" Muchlas said.<\/p>\n<p>The amendment will be one of three major issues to be<br>\naddressed at the congress, the first to be held since president<br>\nSoeharto's New Order regime fell in May 1998.<\/p>\n<p>As a consequence of the now defunct 1985 law on mass<br>\norganizations, Muhammadiyah acknowledged Pancasila as its<br>\nplatform in place of Islam, the organization's founding platform.<\/p>\n<p>Muhammadiyah, a modernist-oriented organization, was founded<br>\nin 1912 here by Muslim cleric and independence struggler Achmad<br>\nDahlan.<\/p>\n<p>Muchlas said that the number of terms a chairman could serve<br>\nand the formulation of an Islamic way of life as guidance for the<br>\n28 million Muhammadiyah members and supporters would be the other<br>\nkey topics addressed at the congress.<\/p>\n<p>A Muhammadiyah executive, Haedar Nashir, who also spoke at the<br>\nnews conference, said the organization's central board of<br>\nexecutives would limit a chairman's term to only two.<\/p>\n<p>The congress will also elect a new chairman to replace interim<br>\nchief Syafiie Ma'arif, who took over from Amien Rais in August<br>\n1998.<\/p>\n<p>Amien was elected chairman in the last congress five years ago<br>\nin Banda Aceh, but relinquished the post after he founded the<br>\nNational Mandate Party.
