        "content": "<p>Mudslide reveals mystery objects<\/p>\n<p>Sri Wahyuni, The Jakarta Post, Yogyakarta<\/p>\n<p>Mystery continues to shroud a number of apparently historical<br>\nobjects that were found after a mudslide flushed out a trench of<br>\nover a kilometer in length in the middle of rice fields in the<br>\nYogyakarta village of Ngestihardjo.<\/p>\n<p>Villagers and local officials remain in the dark over the<br>\norigin and dates of the baffling finding. A small boat, black<br>\nballs with fuses popping out in what could be bombs, ammunition,<br>\na keris, which is a traditional Javanese dagger, and a dragon<br>\nshaped stone were among the objects uncovered. The trench also<br>\ncontained piles of bricks of an as yet unknown construction.<\/p>\n<p>Local police took away the bombs and the ammunition, but<br>\nvillagers placed the other objects on public display, making it<br>\ndifficult for the Yogyakarta archeological office to examine<br>\ntheir origins.<\/p>\n<p>Hundreds of onlookers from the city and surrounding areas<br>\ncontinue to flock to the site since its discovery on Thursday<br>\nlast week.<\/p>\n<p>Heavy rainfall broke a 20-meter-wide hole of an embankment,<br>\ncausing water and mud to flush out the around one and a half<br>\nkilometer long trench. About 20 to 25 meters wide, it cuts<br>\nthrough a section of the rice fields and a street before ending<br>\nat the Bedog River. A small stream of water runs inside the deep<br>\ntrench where locals found the objects.<\/p>\n<p>Some of the objects, such as the boat, appear to be of a more<br>\nrecent period, said Indra Dewa Kusuma, a staffer at the local<br>\narcheological office who was taking inventory of the finding.<\/p>\n<p>The bricks, he said, could date back to the late 19th century<br>\nas there was once an artificial lake to irrigate the surrounding<br>\nrice fields and provide water for a nearby royal palace, a kraton<br>\nthat has long been abandoned.<\/p>\n<p>But Indra added that the bricks could come from an earlier<br>\nperiod, reasoning that the builders had used limestone as mortar<br>\ncommonly found in much older construction.<\/p>",
