Lewotobi still spewing hot ash<\/p>\n<p>Yemris Fointuna, The Jakarta Post, Kupang, East Nusa Tenggara<\/p>\n<p>Mount Lewotobi in East Flores, East Nusa Tenggara, continued to<br>\nspew hot ash up to two kilometers high, and send out lava, rocks,<br>\nfire balls and sulfur, officials said Tuesday.<\/p>\n<p>And forest fires ignited by the eruptions, continued to spread<br>\nout of control around the volcano.<\/p>\n<p>Stanis Tefa, secretary of the refugee and natural disaster<br>\ntask force, said the continued volcanic activity was reported by<br>\nEast Flores Regent Felix Fernandes.<\/p>\n<p>Local villagers were advised to remain alert to the<br>\npossibility of larger eruptions from the volcano in Wulanggitan<br>\nsubdistrict, Tefa said.<\/p>\n<p>He said residents from the villages of Boru, Boru Kedang, Nawa<br>\nKote, Nuri, Nobo Konga and Hokeng Jaya, located on the slopes of<br>\nthe volcano, had been evacuated.<\/p>\n<p>Tefa, who is also the social bureau head at the East Nusa<br>\nTenggara secretariat, said major eruptions on Sunday and Monday<br>\nhad destroyed hundreds of acres of crops and sparked the forest<br>\nfires.<\/p>\n<p>Water sources could not be consumed as they were contaminated<br>\nby sulfur and ash from the volcano, he added.<\/p>\n<p>The seismography unit at the Boru volcano monitoring office in<br>\nEast Flores warned of further eruptions and earthquakes.<\/p>\n<p>Djami Rebo, head of the East Nusa Tenggara resettlement and<br>\nregional infrastructure office, could not determine the amount of<br>\ndamage caused by the eruption.<\/p>\n<p>&quot;We are still coordinating with the local administration to<br>\ncalculate the losses,&quot; he said.<\/p>\n<p>He said his office had sent trucks to supply clean water to<br>\nthe refugees.<\/p>\n<p>The local administration also provided ten tons of rice for<br>\nthe victims, East Nusa Tenggara Governor Piet A. Tallo said on<br>\nTuesday.<\/p>\n<p>He said more assistance, including tents and other logistic<br>\nsupplies, would be sent soon to the refugees.<\/p>",
