Mt. Ciremai closed to public<\/p>\n

Government authorities in Kuningan regency declared here on
\nMonday that the area around Mount Ciremai was closed to the
\npublic, following the increased activity of the volcano.<\/p>\n
Kuningan regent Arifin Setiamihardja said he made the
\nannouncement -- that the surrounding area of Mount Ciremai was
\nclosed -- after consulting with the state-owned forestry firm
\nPerhutani and the Ciremai Observation Post in the area. Perhutani
\nowns and oversees much of the land near Mount Ciremai.<\/p>\n
\"Based on our consultation with those institutions, we declare
\nthat the area is closed to the public, meaning that people are
\nnot allowed to be in the area without authorization, including
\nmountain climbers,\" Arifin said.<\/p>\n
Maman Sukirman, an officer from the Ciremai Observation Post,
\nsaid that they had recorded several small tremors on Friday, but
\ntheir intensity increased on Sunday.<\/p>\n
\"We recorded 18 tremors on Sunday, and one of them was equal
\nto 2.0 on the Richter scale,\" he told The Jakarta Post.<\/p>\n
He said that residents from at least seven subdistricts in the
\nCilimus and Pesawahan districts could feel the largest of the
\ntremors.<\/p>\n
However, Maman said that the residents, who lived below the
\nslopes of the mountain, should not worry about the earth shaking
\ntoo much more than that and that it was not strong enough to
\ndamage buildings.<\/p>\n
Separately, Minister of Social Affairs Bachtiar Chamsyah told
\nreporters that the ministry was closely monitoring the
\ndevelopment on Mount Ciremai, and it was ready to distribute aid
\nimmediately to people, should they need it.<\/p>\n
He said that he had ordered social and welfare offices at the
\nWest Java provincial administration to be ready to help local
\nresidents if Mount Ciremai erupted.<\/p>\n
\"We are always on alert in order to react to natural
\ndisasters, and we are ready to distribute aid,\" Bachtiar said in
\nBandorasa Wetan subdistrict, Cilimus district.<\/p>\n
Meanwhile, the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources beefed
\nup its monitoring at Mount Ciremai, and deployed two additional
\nofficers to the Ciremai Observation Post.<\/p>\n
The monitoring of the mountain was increased after Sunday's
\nactivity, said Iyus Rushana, who was accompanied by two other
\nofficers at the post, Didi Suryadi and Maman Sukirman.<\/p>\n
Mount Ciremai is 3,078 meters (just over 10,000 feet) above
\nsea level is the highest mountain in West Java province.<\/p>\n
The mountain has been quiet for decades. The last eruption
\noccurred in 1938.<\/p>",
