MPR tasks Ad Hoc subcommittees to prepare special session<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): The People's Consultative Assembly's Working
\nCommittee decided on Friday not to establish special committees,
\ninstead assigning its Ad Hoc subcommittees to make preparations
\nfor the special session.<\/p>\n
The Ad Hoc subcommittees will start their meetings on June 7
\nto prepare draft decrees in anticipation of decisions that will
\nbe made during the plenary session.<\/p>\n
\"The Ad Hoc subcommittees will effectively work from June 7
\nuntil July 24, to make all preparations, including the special
\nsession's main agenda,\" Amien said in the Working Committee's
\nplenary session here on Friday.<\/p>\n
He said the Ad Hoc subcommittees would prepare at least three
\ndraft decrees relating to the President's impeachment,
\nappointment of a new president and election of a new vice
\npresident.<\/p>\n
\"Such decrees are needed in anticipation of the possible
\ndecisions the Assembly could make during the special session,\" he
\nsaid, adding that all materials, including the draft decrees and
\nthe special session's agenda, would be endorsed in the
\ncommittee's plenary session on July 24.<\/p>\n
Responding to the call for a hastened special session, Amien
\nsaid after the meeting that the Assembly had no plans to hasten
\nthe plenary session because it was against the Constitution.<\/p>\n
\"The MPR is making preparations for the special session in
\naccordance with the 2000 MPR Decree on special sessions and its
\ninternal rules, and it has no constitutional reason to hasten it.
\nUnder such a standard situation, it is impossible for the
\nAssembly to hasten the special session because it is against the
\nConstitution,\" he said.<\/p>\n
The Working Committee also decided to convene a plenary
\nsession on June 7 to listen to factions' general views on the
\nspecial session's agenda, as they are currently divided over the
\nissue.<\/p>\n
Major factions said the special session's agenda would ask
\nPresident Abdurrahman to provide accountability for the
\ngovernment's administration, while the National Awakening Party
\n(PKB) and Love the Nation Democratic Party (PDKB) factions were
\nof the opinion that the special session's agenda should ask the
\nPresident to account for the House's two memorandums of censure.<\/p>\n
\"The Assembly's main agenda in the special session will be to
\nask for the President's account of his alleged involvement in
\nBulogate and Bruneigate, two financial scandals for which the
\nHouse has censured the President,\" Ali Masjkur Musa of the PKB
\nfaction said.<\/p>\n
He said that, to be consistent, the Ad Hoc Committees should
\nalso prepare a draft decree on political compromise because it
\nwould be possible for the President to reach a political
\ncompromise with major parties in the Assembly.<\/p>\n
The Attorney General's Office stated earlier this week that
