He stated that the Indonesian constitution mandates that the\neconomy be structured as a collective endeavour based on the principle\nof kinship. \u201cThis mandate shows that Indonesia\u2019s economic development\nmust not be left solely to free competition, which makes the strong more\npowerful and sidelines the weak,\u201d Muzani said. He described cooperatives\nas a means of bringing democracy into economic life. \u201cThrough\nprofessionally managed cooperatives, farmers can strengthen their\nbargaining position, fishermen can gain market access, and\nmicro-enterprises can develop. The distribution of essential goods can\nbe shortened, and the added value of the economy can be enjoyed by the\ncommunity,\u201d he explained.
