MPR reminded to heed workers' aspirations<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): Indonesia's only sanctioned labor union called
\non the People's Consultative Assembly (MPR) yesterday to draw up
\nState Policy Guidelines which prioritized workers' welfare and
\nthe creation of new jobs.<\/p>\n
Datuk Bagindo, the chairman of the Federation of All-
\nIndonesian Workers Union, said in a statement that the union was
\nconfident the people's representatives in their 11-day convention
\nwould heed the aspirations of Indonesian workers and incorporate
\nthem into their decisions.<\/p>\n
\"We also entrust to you the election of the 1998-2003
\npresident and vice president, in accordance with the existing
\nmechanism,\" Datuk said.<\/p>\n
Regarding the next cabinet, the union leader said it should be
\nfilled with people with leadership skills and the ability to deal
\nwith the economic crisis.<\/p>\n
\"The cabinet members should be able to abolish the high-cost
\neconomy, oligopoly monopolies, and nepotism, in order to improve
\nthe welfare of the people, especially workers,\" Datuk said.<\/p>\n
\"It is in our interest that modern technology be applied
\nproperly so that it does not rob us... of employment,\" he said.<\/p>\n
The chairman instructed members and workers across the country
\nto help preserve unity and maintain order so that the people's
\nrepresentatives could conduct their deliberations successfully.<\/p>\n
He also warned workers against rumors that might provoke
\nunrest. \"Try to maintain your productivity so that the economic
\ncrisis can be turned into the start of the path to a better
