MPR finishes Constitutional Commission selection<\/p>\n

The People's Consultative Assembly (MPR) on Monday picked 31
\npeople to fill the posts in the Constitutional Commission (KK)
\nfollowing a week-long hearing as part of its selection method.<\/p>\n
Chairman of the ad hoc committee in charge of the selection
\n(PAH I) Jacob Tobing refused to disclose the names, but sources
\nsaid that most of them were scholars.<\/p>\n
\"We will first report this selection result to the Assembly's
\nWorking Body tomorrow (Tuesday),\" Jacob of the Indonesian
\nDemocratic Party of Struggle (PDI Perjuangan) told the press
\nafter a closed-door meeting.<\/p>\n
Sources said that among the 31 selected were constitutional
\nexperts Sri Soemantri and Dahlan Thaib, economist Sri Adiningsih,
\nlaw experts Fadjrul Falaakh, Maria Farida, Tjipta Lesmana and
\nErnawati Munir, former envoys Hasyim Djalal and Usman Hasan, and
\nformer legislators Ishak Latuconsina and Farida Syamsi Chadaria.<\/p>\n
Baharuddin Aritonang of Golkar said the commission would start
\nworking soon after the endorsement, scheduled for Tuesday.<\/p>\n
Based on an Assembly decree, the Constitutional Commission
\nwill work for seven months.<\/p>\n
The Constitutional Commission is tasked to assess the four
\nphases of amendments to the 1945 Constitution which many have
\nsaid were \"not well-structured\".<\/p>\n
On the clarification hearing with the legislators last week,
\nSri Soemantri criticized the legislators for making short-sighted
\npolitical compromises to reach a consensus during the amendment
\nprocess.<\/p>\n
He said the consensus of political parties had made the
\namendments unclear and inconsistent. \"We must avoid compromise to
\nmake a good Constitution,\" Soemantri said.<\/p>\n
Citing some articles as examples, Soemantri said that
\ninconsistencies in the constitution emerged due to gradual
\namendments.<\/p>\n
He said the Constitution gave much too power to the House of
\nRepresentatives (DPR) in some respects.<\/p>\n
Baharuddin welcome the intention of some experts to upgrade
\nthe amendments.<\/p>\n
\"Members of the Constitutional Commission have to take an
\nacademic approach during the assessment. But the MPR will have
\nthe final authority to approve the recommendation or not,\" he
\nsaid.<\/p>\n
The Assembly agreed to set up its own semi-independent version
\nof the Constitutional Commission last year apparently to appease
\npublic demand for an independent commission.<\/p>\n
The public and a coalition of nongovernmental organizations
\nhad demanded the establishment of a fully independent commission
\nto draft a new Constitution.<\/p>\n
The demand provoked controversy during the Annual Session of
\nthe Assembly last year and the Assembly responded by issuing a
\ndecree for the setting up of its own version of the
\nConstitutional Commission.<\/p>\n
