MPR Deputy Chair Lestari Moerdijat is pushing for the enhancement of\npublic literacy as the foundation for facing increasingly heavy\nchallenges in nation-building.<\/p>\n
Highlighting the results of the 2025 Academic Ability Test (TKA),\nwhich show that students\u2019 textual comprehension reaches only 49.21%, the\nfigure familiarly known as Rerie asserts that literacy is not merely the\nability to read, but a bulwark of sovereignty amid the torrent of\ninformation.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe literacy challenges in the current era are very heavy. Because\nit\u2019s not just about creating a society that can merely read, but also\ncapable of critical thinking amid the torrent of information,\u201d said\nLestari in a written statement on Wednesday (25\/3).<\/p>\n
The 2025 TKA results released by the Ministry of Basic and Secondary\nEducation (Kemendikdasmen) record that textual comprehension (students\u2019\nability to understand vocabulary, story background, and text structure)\nwas achieved by 49.21% of TKA participants.<\/p>\n
Students\u2019 inferential ability (explaining meaning relationships\nbetween sentences\/paragraphs) was recorded at 43.21%, while the ability\nto evaluate and appreciate texts adequately was achieved by only 45.32%\nof participants.<\/p>\n
These notes, according to Lestari, indicate that more than half of\nthe student participants do not yet have a strong literacy\nfoundation.<\/p>\n
\u201cThis is not just a matter of numbers, but a real threat to the\nnation\u2019s competitiveness and sovereignty,\u201d emphasised Rerie, Lestari\u2019s\naffectionate nickname.<\/p>\n
Rerie, who is also a member of DPR RI Commission X, highlighted\nseveral obstacles in improving literacy, including literacy disparities\nbetween regions, the strong oral culture compared to written, relatively\nexpensive book prices, and lack of family environmental support.<\/p>\n
Steps that can be taken immediately, according to Rerie, include\nfacilitating public access to books through the availability of quality\nbooks in libraries spread across Indonesia and the elimination of\nbook-related taxes, such as VAT and taxes on paper raw materials for\nbooks.<\/p>\n
She added that DPR RI Commission XIII is pushing for revisions to the\nBook Law to eliminate VAT on books.<\/p>\n
In addition, Rerie stressed the importance of equitable distribution\nof quality teachers in the regions.<\/p>\n
\u201cTeachers are one of the literacy commanders in the field, along with\nthe family. It\u2019s not enough to just send teachers to the regions, but\nalso to ensure they receive proper support and incentives,\u201d said the\nmember of the NasDem Party\u2019s Supreme Council.<\/p>\n
Rerie urged that literacy enhancement efforts become a measurable\nnational movement. Strong collaboration between the central government,\nregional governments, and society must be realised to ensure the success\nof the literacy movement, because literacy is the foundation of national\nsovereignty.<\/p>\n
