Jakarta (ANTARA) - A member of the House of Representatives\nCommission XIII, Mafirion, is urging the National Human Rights\nCommission (Komnas HAM) to promptly conclude whether the acid splashing\nincident targeting the Deputy Coordinator of the Commission for Missing\nPersons and Victims of Violence (KontraS), Andrie Yunus, constitutes a\nhuman rights violation or not.<\/p>\n
He assesses the acid splashing act as more than mere ordinary\ncriminal offence, but rather a form of violence that directly deprives\nthe victim of their fundamental rights as a human being. In his view,\nthis case strongly qualifies as a human rights violation.<\/p>\n
\u201cThis incident clearly violates the right to safe living, the right\nto be free from torture, and the right to personal protection. This is\nnot merely criminality, but has entered the category of human rights\nviolation,\u201d said Mafirion in his statement in Jakarta on Monday.<\/p>\n
According to him, Komnas HAM must promptly make a conclusion so that\nlaw enforcement obtains a strong reference based on human rights. If\nKomnas HAM does not act swiftly, this case risks being positioned as an\nordinary criminal offence, not a serious human rights violation.<\/p>\n
This lack of clarity in stance, in his opinion, also has the\npotential to weaken efforts to enforce justice and protect human rights\ndefenders in Indonesia.<\/p>\n
\u201cKomnas HAM must not hesitate to promptly conclude the Andrie Yunus\ncase. This is important to ensure that the state is present and serious\nin protecting human rights activists,\u201d he stated.<\/p>\n
Mafirion explained that if this case is not promptly concluded, it\nwill give rise to several serious impacts, such as weakening the\nvictim\u2019s position because the handling will only be viewed as an\nordinary criminal case without a comprehensive human rights protection\napproach.<\/p>\n
Additionally, it obscures the motive and intellectual actors, making\nit difficult to uncover potential involvement of certain parties,\nincluding the possibility of actors behind the scenes.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe are also concerned that if it is not promptly concluded, it will\ncreate a chilling effect for other activists and human rights defenders,\nwhich can hinder advocacy work. Public trust in the state, particularly\nin its commitment to human rights enforcement, will also decline,\u201d he\nrevealed.<\/p>\n
Furthermore, he emphasised that the determination of an incident\nholds very important and strategic meaning.<\/p>\n
\u201cThis determination is not merely a label, but becomes the legal and\nmoral basis to ensure more serious, comprehensive, and just handling,\u201d\nsaid Mafirion.<\/p>\n
He detailed that the importance of determination is to guarantee\nmaximum protection for the victim, including physical, psychological,\nand social recovery. Additionally, classifying it as a human rights\nviolation can drive the full disclosure of the truth, including the\npossibility of masterminds or intellectual actors.<\/p>\n
Mafirion called on Komnas HAM to promptly take proactive and bold\nsteps in concluding this case.<\/p>\n
