A member of the Indonesian House of Representatives has cautioned the government against implementing a work-from-home (WFH) policy for the private sector that could hinder company performance, emphasising the need for careful planning to balance energy efficiency goals with business targets. While appreciating the initiative as a measure to save fuel, the MP stressed that the policy should not be uniformly applied to private employees like civil servants, and called for clear definitions of affected workers and durations to assess savings accurately. Additionally, he urged coordination with businesses to maintain productivity and ensure public services remain unaffected.

JAKARTA - A member of Commission II of the House of Representatives
from the Nasdem Faction, Ujang Bey, has reminded the government that the
proposal for a work-from-home (WFH) policy of one day per week for the
private sector should not disrupt company performance.

Ujang stated that although he appreciates the government’s push for
the WFH policy as an effort to achieve energy efficiency, its
implementation must be carefully designed and measured.

“For the private sector, I think the government must be cautious in
implementing the WFH programme. Because the private sector has specific
targets for companies, and each employee is burdened with performance
achievements. Don’t let the implementation of WFH for the private sector
disrupt the stability of company performance,” said Ujang to reporters
on Monday (23/3/2026).

According to him, the government needs to clearly determine the
number of civil servants (ASN) and private workers who will be affected,
including the duration of the policy’s implementation.

From there, according to him, the government can calculate how much
fuel savings will be achieved.

He assessed that the implementation of WFH in the private sector
cannot be equated with that for ASN, given that companies have targets
and performance burdens that must be met by each employee.

Therefore, Ujang emphasised the importance of coordination between
the government and business actors so that the policy does not have a
negative impact on company productivity.

In addition, he also reminded that the WFH policy should not reduce
the quality of public services.

“Also map out the ASN whose services directly interact with the
public; don’t let this policy lead to complaints from the public because
services are not optimal,” he said.

Ujang assessed that the effectiveness of the WFH policy greatly
depends on thorough planning and implementation in line with the
targets.

Previously reported, the Minister for State Secretary (Mensesneg)
Prasetyo Hadi stated that the one-day-per-week WFH policy would not
apply to all sectors.

He emphasised that only certain sectors that allow remote work would
implement the policy.

He said that the policy related to one day of WFH per week is still
being formulated.

According to Prasetyo, the plan is a directive from the President in
a full cabinet plenary session as an effort to promote efficiency in the
work environment, including in the government sector.
",
