Move to unseat Amien opposed<\/p>\n
JAKARTA: A move by the former ruling Golkar Party to unseat
\nthe speaker of the People's Consultative Assembly, Amien Rais,
\nhas met strong resistance from the National Awakening Party (PKB)
\nand Amien's National Mandate Party (PAN).<\/p>\n
Ali Masjkur Musa, chairman of the PKB faction at the House of
\nRepresentatives, said such a move would provoke political
\ninstability in the country.<\/p>\n
\"I am against Amien's removal. Let us keep (House Speaker)
\nAkbar Tandjung, (President) Megawati Soekarnoputri, (Vice
\nPresident) Hamzah Haz and Amien Rais until 2004,\" Ali told
\nreporters at the House building.<\/p>\n
According to him, some MPR factions had been trying to marshal
\nforces to depose Amien from his post as MPR chairman.<\/p>\n
The maneuvers to sack Amien gained momentum after the House
\nplenary meeting on Monday voted against establishing a special
\ncommittee to investigate a Rp 40 billion scandal at the State
\nLogistics Agency's (Bulog), involving Golkar's chairman Akbar
\nTandjung.<\/p>\n
Ali said the maneuvers to unseat Amien were meant to suppress
\nmembers of the Reform faction who all voted for the establishment
\nof the Buloggate special committee.<\/p>\n
Meanwhile, PAN board member AM Fatwa said Friday that removing
\nAmien from the chairmanship of the MPR would add up to
\nabandonment of the reform movement.<\/p>\n
Fatwa said the general MPR session in 1999 elected Amien to
\nthe post because he was a leader of the reform movement, rather
\nthan as chairman of the PAN party.<\/p>\n
