        "content": "<p>Move 'Kramat Tunggak' to a coastal area: Mayor<\/p>\n<p>JAKARTA (JP): The North Jakarta mayor has suggested that the<br>\n11-hectare Kramat Tunggak red-light district be relocated to a<br>\ncoastal area in the Jakarta Bay reclamation project instead of<br>\nRawa Malang in Cilincing, North Jakarta.<\/p>\n<p>\"I think it is most logical that the prostitutes at the red-<br>\nlight district be moved to a coastal area at the reclamation<br>\nproject,\" Suprawito told reporters at City Hall yesterday.<\/p>\n<p>He said that the most suitable location for the relocation of<br>\nthe largest red-light district in the city is the coastal area<br>\nbordering the township of Bekasi in West Java.<\/p>\n<p>Suprawito said he did not agree with a proposal raised by a<br>\ncity councilor that the complex be relocated to Rawa Malang, in<br>\nCilincing. \"Rawa Malang is also located near crowded residential<br>\nareas,\" he argued.<\/p>\n<p>Atje Muljadi, the chairman of the City Council's commission E<br>\nin charge of public welfare, urged the city administration<br>\nrecently to speed up the relocation of the Kramat Tunggak<br>\nprostitution complex since its existence can no longer be<br>\naccepted by people living nearby..<\/p>\n<p>When the red-light district was officially opened in 1972 as a<br>\nwomen's rehabilitation center, it was situated in an isolated<br>\narea, far away from housing complexes. However the rapid growth<br>\nof the city has caused housing complexes to be built around the<br>\narea.<\/p>\n<p>The district is home to 1,850 prostitutes and is the only red-<br>\nlight complex controlled by the City Administration.<\/p>\n<p>Based on the results of a recent study conducted by the City<br>\nSocial Service Office in cooperation with University of<br>\nIndonesia, Atje said the 20-hectare Rawa Malang was the most<br>\nappropriate site for the prostitutes.<\/p>\n<p>Suprawito refused to clarify when the relocation process would<br>\nbe carried out.<\/p>\n<p>He said for the time being, business runs as usual at Kramat<br>\nTunggak pending the final decision to be made by the governor on<br>\nthe definite relocation site.<\/p>\n<p>The mayoralty is planning to turn the district into a<br>\nresidential complex.(32)<\/p>",
